PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY


    Public health dentistry specialty diagnoses, prevent and control oral diseases and promote oral and overall health through organized community efforts. This specialty imparts leadership and expertise in population-based dentistry, oral health surveillance, policy development, community-based disease prevention and health promotion. It mainly prioritizes community health promotion, research, education and health care programs. Our mission is to provide quality health care inside department and out in the community through mobile dental clinic. .

• Rangampeta : Rural dental health centre (12 km)


The Department of Public health dentistry focuses on improving oral health and preventing oral diseases in populations.
1. Community oral health assessment: Students will learn how to assess the oral health status of a community and identify the factors that contribute to oral health disparities. This is achieved through conducting oral health survey and dental camps to reach the needy population.
 Oral health survey is to identify oral health problems, understand their causes, and develop strategies for prevention and control. They play a critical role in understanding the oral health needs of populations and guiding efforts to improve oral health and prevent oral diseases.
2. Dental epidemiology: Students will study the distribution and determinants of oral diseases in populations and develop strategies for disease prevention and control.
3. Health promotion and education: Students will learn how to design and implement health education programs to promote oral health and prevent oral diseases in communities.
 Oral health education is a critical component of public health dentistry, as it can help individuals understand the importance of oral health and adopt healthy behaviors. This is achieved through display health education posters and models.
 Dental health promotion: Students will learn about the factors that influence oral health behaviors and develop strategies for promoting oral health.
 Health communication: Students will learn about different methods of communicating about oral health, including print and electronic media, social media, and community outreach.
 Community engagement: Students will learn about the importance of involving communities in oral health education and how to develop effective partnerships with community organizations.
 Health literacy: Students will learn about the importance of health literacy in oral health promotion and how to design materials and programs that are accessible and easy to understand.
 Evaluation of health education programs: Students will learn about the methods used to evaluate the effectiveness of oral health education programs and how to use this information to improve future programs.
4. Dental public health policy and planning : Students will learn about the policy and planning frameworks that support oral health programs and services at local and national levels
5. Preventive dentistry: Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a clinical setting, working with patients in underserved communities to provide oral health care and education.

The Department of Public Health Dentistry at Gsl dental college and hospital, Rajahmundry was established in 2014. It is committed to teach undergraduate students in public health dentistry and to investigate the risk factors for oral disease, their relation to systemic disease utilising oral epidemiological methods to study health outcomes of dental services and oral health policy. Public Health Dentistry is a subject designed to explore professional ethics as they relate to dentist’s relationships to peers, patients and the community. Students attend dental camps and perform initial screening examinations. They are sensitised to prioritize needs of special populations. Services
