Prosthodontics, also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry, is the area of
dentistry that
focuses on dental prostheses. It is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the
American Dental
Association (ADA), Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal College of Surgeons of
Edinburgh, Royal
College of Surgeons of Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, Royal College of
Dentists of Canada,
and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. The ADA defines it as "the dental
specialty pertaining
to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function,
comfort,
appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions
associated with missing or deficient teeth or oral and maxillofacial tissues using
biocompatible
substitutes.
The department has separate working clinics for post graduates and under graduate students.
A central sterilization room looks after the overall sterilization and disinfection of instruments, materials, working area and laundry.
Weekly seminars, journal club presentations and tutorials for students are conducted in the seminar room. Department has latest audio-visual facilities and free access to the high speed internet. Postgraduates have a separate room for themselves where they have their individual lockers to keep their records and personal belongings.
The department has a good patient inflow. On an average about 60 patients visit the department for treatment daily. At the under graduate level, we impart training as small group discussion as well as in individual manner so as to prepare a student to diagnose and treat the diseases of supporting structures of the teeth on a daily practice basis and make appropriate referrals for advance care. It also trains students for further training in Prosthodontics and crown and bridge. Both under- graduate and post graduate students are trained for tooth preparation and implant placement on dental simulators for effective learning. The post graduates are exclusively trained to handle CAD CAM Technology. The postgraduate programme in prosthodontics aims at producing a graduate competent in teaching, clinical work and research activities.

PG PROSTHODONTICS
The structures of postgraduate training is aimed at making students competent at all forms of prosthodontic rehabilitation with an ability to search beyond the realms of basic knowledge. They are well trained in various fields of Removable and Fixed prosthodontics. We work in association with oral and maxillofacial surgery and GSLcancer hospital/Svatantra cancer institute, thereby training the postgraduates with specialemphasis towards maxillofacial rehabilitation. Institute also facilitates the implant module in association with ICOI where our Postgraduatesare trained in advanced implantology like sinus-lift, zygoma implants, ridge augmentation, full mouth implants, hybrid prosthesis. They are well trained for CBCT evaluation, Computer Aided Designing, and fabrication of surgical guides using 3D printing. There are regular academic discussions of recent journal articles and topics of significance where the student is able to grasp the recent knowledge of rehabilitation and apply it clinically.
Students in their course, learn to decode the advanced diagnostic aids used for successful rehabilitation such as CBCT. The first six months of their course will be the intensive training towards the pre-clinical prosthodontics which will guide them through the next phase of clinical prosthetic dentistry. During this phase they will be using the advanced dental simulators and digital phantom heads to practice their skills.Next two and half period of their post graduation course include the clinical phase where they are well trained towards both conventional and digital way of fabricating the prosthesis using the manual dental ceramic and acrylic laboratoryfollowed by the recent advanced 3-D printing technologies. We also have the functional CAD-CAM machine for fabricating the prosthesis. They are also the active participants in the mega camps conducted by the college where free dentures are fabricated and delivered. All our students are expected to complete the preclinical and clinical Quota according to the curriculum formulated by the Dental Council of India. They are also well guided and encouraged towards research activities and are able to take good suggestion from the renowned authors/investigators from different institutions. Students are encouraged to attend and take part in various national and international conferences to gain and exchange the knowledge with their peer graduates. They are also allowed to present various paper and poster presentations regarding recent advances and their own research. They actively present the seminars and journal discussions regularly along with participation in the interdepartmental presentations. During the prescribed 3 year coursetheyare guided to excel in both academics and clinicals.
UG PROSTHODONTICS
The undergraduate training program aims at ensuring that students are confident in being able to render basic prosthodontic care to their patients in the future in the form of all types of partial and complete removable dentures. They also receive training in being able to provide basic fixed prosthodontics care in the form of non-complex crowns and bridges. Department is involved in teaching I,II,III,IV BDS students as well as interns. I and II BDS students are trained for preclinical prosthodontics and dental materials. III BDS and IV BDS are trained for different clinical scenarios where the students treat partial and completely edentulous patients for removable prosthesis. Undergraduates are also involved in learning the advanced preclinical prosthodontics using dental simulators such as VIRTEASY. In internship they are trained for fixed prosthodontics, they also assist the Postgraduates and faculty in their learning process where a special emphasis is given towards diagnosis and treatment planning. We have very spacious separate units for under graduation and postgraduation courses. We also have the superintern programme where the interns are trained towards the dental implant where they are supposed to place a minimum of two implants. They present seminars and actively involve in academic discussion. Interns are allowed to participate in the interdepartmental presentations conducted weekly.
