DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS

Overview

Overview

The Periodontics Department in GSL Dental College has separate undergraduate and postgraduate sections equipped with modern dental chairs fitted with ultrasonic scalers as per Dental Council of India guidelines.

The Department of Periodontics is actively engaged in the educational, research, and community services of the College. Our curriculum includes undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing education programs with a focus on evidence-based periodontics and implant dentistry. Clinical training emphasizes the understanding of periodontal and peri-implant health and treatment of associated diseases. The department also provides instruction via continuing dental education courses to practicing dentists. Faculty members are actively involved in basic, translational, and clinical investigation and provide students mentorship and guidance in research.

The department has well qualified and experienced teaching faculty on a permanent full time teaching basis. All types of periodontal treatment are provided to the patients at a minimal cost.

The didactic areas of instruction include the normal periodontium at the macro and microscopic level, periodontal pathology including intra-oral lesions associated with periodontal conditions, periodontal microbiology and immunology, pain control and pharmacology applicable to periodontal treatments, cell biology, wound healing including periodontal regeneration, dental implantology, case management, epidemiology and statistics in Periodontology.

Vision
To incorporate all the current advances in the basic and clinical know-how of periodontology and bridging the gap between research and clinical practice.

Mission
To generate budding professionals in the field of Periodontology on par with global contemporary standards to encourage and support clinical and basic research activities in the student community

Objectives
Provide undergraduate students with a strong theoretical and clinical foundation in the field of Periodontology for their future careers in dentistry. Enrich the Post graduate student with an in-depth understanding of contemporary periodontics and to bridge the gap between the current concepts in periodontal research and clinical practice To create awareness regarding oral health in the population by conducting community outreach programs like screening camps, oral health education programs, providing oral health care services to the needy free of cost and organizing oral hygiene day celebration-related activities etc.. To collaborate with various scientific organizations for research based activities. To establish a scholarly platform to conduct scientific activities like CDE programs, Symposia, Workshops and certified training courses reaching national and international fraternity and promote interaction amongst the same.

Faculty Facilites

Facilites

The department has separate working clinics for postgraduate and undergraduate students. A central sterilization room looks after the overall sterilization and disinfection of instruments, materials, working area and Laundry. Weekly seminars, Journal club presentations and tutorials for students are conducted in the seminar room. Department has the latest audio-visual facilities and free access to the high speed internet. Postgraduates have a separate room for themselves where they have their individual lockers to keep their records and personal belongings. The department hasa good patient inflow. On an average about 80 patients visit the department for treatment daily. At the undergraduate level, we impart training as small group discussion as well as in individual manner so as to prepare a student to diagnose and treat the diseases of the supporting structures of the teeth on a daily practice basis and make appropriate referrals for advanced care. It also trains students for further training in Periodontics & Implantology. The post graduate program in periodontics aims at producing a graduate competent in teaching, clinical work & research activities

Activities

Activities

Academic and research activities: The faculty, post graduate students and undergraduate students are encouraged to attend conferences and workshops and present scientific papers, posters and table clinics. In addition to their library dissertation, post graduate students are encouraged to take up short term collaborative research projects and also publish the same in peer-reviewed indexed journals. The department has also been instrumental in organizing seminars, symposia and workshops periodically. Our faculty have been invited as resource persons and both students and faculty have won several awards and prizes for their presentations at various national and international scientific forums of repute. Research thrust areas: Platelet concentrates in periodontal regeneration (soft and hard tissue) Autologous stem cells in periodontal regeneration Laser assisted periodontal flap surgery Dental implants Photodynamic therapy Photobiomodulation Host modulation therapy Phytomedicine in periodontal therapy

DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTOLOGY & ORAL IMPLANTOLOGY Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes and the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures & tissues. Periodontology anddental implant surgery at GSLdental college is a three year program that provides training in all aspects of periodontal and dental implant therapy, by focusing on didactic clinical ,research and teaching training. The key goal of this program is to produce well rounded periodontists with advanced knowledge in the field of periodontal and dental implant science, with exceptional clinical skills and good exposure in research who areable to understand and implement evidence based treatment approaches.

PG CURRICULUM
Under the guidance of a team of highly qualified and competent professional senior periodontists,at GSL dental college & hospital, postgraduate students can rely on experience and knowledge of the facultyto train them, and aregiven an opportunity to take part in all practice activities. This is a 3-year course which enables the successful post-graduate student to practice periodontics and implant dentistry at the specialist level. Pre- clinical exercises likesuturing techniques, splinting, occlusal adjustments, for first year post graduate students before they enter into clinical cases boost confidence in them. Students are encouraged to take advanced implant placement procedures for their main dissertation topic.GSL dental collegeprovides advanced radiographic equipment like CBCT for implant planning and placement thus making the students more confident in implant surgicalprocedures. Many soft tissue procedures are done with advanced surgical equipment like LASERS and electro-cautery. Post-graduates are encouraged to perform various Muco-gingival/esthetic surgeries around implants as well as natural dentition under the professional guidance. Post graduates in the department of periodontology will have thorough knowledge about various advanced bone grafts & grafting techniques that are used around implants & natural dentition. Department of Periodontology at GSL dental college provides all the necessary surgical equipment like IMPLANT KITS, PHYSIO DISPENCER, LASER UNIT , ELECTRO-CAUTERYto the post graduate students. Weekly written exams are conducted to assess the theoretical knowledge of the Post graduate students. BASIC SCIENCE lectures will be conducted to first year post graduates to enhance the clinical knowledge. Post graduate students are encouraged to participate and present their clinical knowledge in the International, National & state conferences. Seminars & journal clubs will be presented by the post graduate students to improve their teaching skills. Students are encouraged to attend inter-departmental meetings and various clinico-pathological meetings.
